At a time when the government is asking people not to let the guards down and urging them to get booster doses in order to protect themselves against the coronavirus, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has indicated that booster dose of Bharat Biotech’s covaxin is safe.
ICMR has Studied the Effectiveness of the Vaccine
The ICMR has also stated that it is necessary to ensure persistent immunity to minimise breakthrough infections of COVID-19 due to new emerging variants of the highly infectious disease.
Minister of State for Health Bharati Pravin Pawar said that the studies on the effectiveness and side effects of the coronavirus vaccines have been done by the ICMR.
Effectiveness of Covaxin was 71 percent
In a written reply to the Parliament, Pawar said that a multi-centric hospital-based, case-control study was done between May and June in the year 2021. During the study, it was found that the effectiveness of Covaxin was 71 per cent and that of Covishield was 85 per cent. The minister said that the effectiveness estimates were found to be similar against the Delta strain and sub-linages.
The persistence of immunogenicity was assessed for the period of up to six months after a two or three-dose with Covaxin in the second. It was found during the study that a booster dose of Covaxin is not only safe but also necessary to ensure persistent immunity in order to minimize breakthroughs of coronavirus infections.
