Surgeons at AOI Successfully Treat Massive Retroperitoneal Liposarcoma
INDIA, June 30, 2023 – The American Oncology Institute (AOI) in Kanuru, Vijayawada, has achieved a remarkable feat by successfully treating a 30×20 cm retroperitoneal liposarcoma, saving the life of a 64-year-old woman. Led by Dr. Vijay Koduru, a Consultant Surgical Oncologist, and supported by Dr. Mrudula Tatakuri, a Consultant Anaesthesiologist, the surgical team performed a complex laparotomy and surgical excision that lasted for approximately 7 hours.
The patient had presented with a persistent cough, and an MRI scan revealed a massive retroperitoneal mass encasing major vessels in the abdomen. The tumor, identified as a liposarcoma, posed a significant challenge due to its large size and proximity to vital organs. Liposarcoma is a rare and aggressive form of cancer that originates in fat cells, and retroperitoneal liposarcomas are particularly difficult to treat.
Complex Surgery Removes Challenging Tumor Encasing Major Vessels
Dr. Vijay Koduru, Consultant Surgical Oncologist, highlighted the challenges involved in treating such a massive tumor. He mentioned the complexity of the procedure, including the presence of major vessels attached to the mass, diaphragmatic attachment, anticipated extensive bleeding, and the need for prolonged ventilation. During the surgery, the team encountered a temporary drop in blood pressure due to the mass compressing the Aorta and inferior vena cava. However, with inotropic support and blood transfusion, the patient’s condition stabilized.
Following the surgery, the patient required prolonged ventilation for a day due to the significant intraoperative bleeding and high inotropic support. Additionally, she experienced postoperative delirium, which was successfully treated. The multidisciplinary approach, combined with the expertise and dedication of the medical team, played a crucial role in the patient’s recovery.
