Is Intermittent Fasting Good for your Body to lose Extra Kilos!!
There are a number of ways in which we try to reduce our weight. Intermittent fasting has been in trend in the recent past for this. Although it is in trend, there is no evidence to substantiate it. But how to find out which one will give the best results? A recent study has tried to answer this.
The study, published in the journal of the American Heart Association, found that it is not the interval between meals but the quantity of meals that is an important predictor of weight gain or reduction.
According to Wendy L. Bennett – MD, MPH, an associate professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, who is the senior author of the study, intermittent fasting or time-restricted eating patterns are more popular these days, but studies have not determined it so far.
As part of the study, around 550 adults were enrolled from three health systems in Maryland and Pennsylvania. The study tried to find an association between the time from the first meal to the last meal and its effect on body weight.
The average body mass index of these participants was 30.8, which is considered obese. The average follow-up time for weight recorded in the electronic health record was 6.3 years.
An app was created for participants to catalogue sleeping, eating and wake-up time. Based on the data recorded in the app, researchers managed to find the gap between the first meal and the last meal along with other details.
According to study author Di Zhao, the study found that meal frequency and total calorie intake were stronger risk factors for change in weight
A 2022 statistic from American Heart Association shows that 40 per cent of adults in the US are obese. In 2017, it stated that irregular patterns of total caloric intake are less favourable for maintaining cardiovascular health and body weight.
