Dr H.K. Chopra, senior consultant, a cardiologist, at Moolchand Medcity, New Delhi joined us on Facebook Live session on ‘Health Care During Covid-19 Times’.
As the Covid-19 pandemic has created an unprecedented global impact on public health and health care. Covid and social distancing restrictions have also disrupted the delivery of routine health care across the country. Dr H.K. Chopra shares some health care tips with Healthwire Media.
Dr Chopra explained that the persons with heart disease mainly hypertension are linked to a higher risk of serious illness from Covid-19, and therefore they must take care of themselves. He added as coronavirus is a respiratory disease, and when the lungs aren’t working properly, the heart has to work harder to pump oxygen-rich blood around the body. That added stress can be dangerous for people with heart disease.
He further explained, “Social distancing and strict hygiene measures are particularly important for people living with cardiovascular disease given their increased vulnerability to the most severe complications of Covid-19. However, there is growing concern that people with chronic diseases are avoiding their regular medical visits, investigations or vaccinations in a bid to avoid contracting Covid-19. Staying home, using a threefold mask, reduce stress level and proper medication to maintain blood pressure rate are highly recommended for heart patients.”
It is strongly advisable for the patients to continue their medicines as prescribed and not to stop them unless they are advised differently by their doctors. If you think you’re having a heart attack or some breathlessness or other heart issue, don’t ride it out at home it’s really important to come in and get evaluated so you can get the problem taken care of early, he added.
Dr Chopra also gave tips on handwashing, social distancing, proper use of masks, avoidance of undue stress, the importance of proper diet, exercise both for the present times and even in normal time to keep your heart healthy.
