October witnessed the first monthly fall in Covid-19 infections since the outbreak of the pandemic in the country. According to official data, India in October registered a nearly 30 per cent decline in Covid-19 numbers in comparison to last month.
While various European countries and the United States continue to witness the second wave of coronavirus infections, India has recorded its first monthly dip in Covid-19 infections and deaths since the pandemic began in March this year.
Around 18.3 lakh new cases were recorded during the month, down from 19.9 lakh infections that were reported in August, and 26.2 lakh in the month of September pointing to a decline in the coronavirus graph since mid-September.
Covid-19 deaths have also followed a similar trajectory, the number of deaths due to the virus also saw a decline of about 29 percent as compared to the previous month’s figures. In October, a little less than 23,500 deaths were recorded, 29% less than the toll of 33,255 in September, it was even less than the toll of 28,859 in August.
Covid-19 cases as well as deaths had shown a rise in each successive month before October since the outbreak began in multiple regions of the country in March this year.
India continues to report a trend of steadily decreasing active cases. Presently the active cases comprise merely 7.16% of the total positive cases of the country standing at 5,82,649. Active cases are below 6 lakh for the second consecutive day.

79% of the new recovered cases are observed to be concentrated in 10 States/UTs.
India has witnessed significant success in its collective fight against the global pandemic. The Case Fatality Rate (CFR) has fallen below 1.5%. On a progressive decline, the CFR is 1.49% on Saturday. India’s deaths per million are also at a very low level of 88 deaths per million.
Over the last one month, the number of fresh cases reported dropped to 1.2 lakh compared to 1.6 lakh in September. The state also reported an increase in recoveries and a decline in daily deaths. “We saw a decline in certain key indicators that reflects declining infection rate in the state,” said health secretary J Radhakrishnan.
