After receiving the coronavirus vaccine on Saturday, as many as 51 healthcare workers experienced mild adverse events in Delhi. Charak Hospital confirmed two of these incidents, while the Northern Railway Central Hospital reported another two.
The southern and southwestern districts of Delhi reported 11 cases, while the east and west districts each reported six cases. North West Delhi has recorded four adverse events, two in Central Delhi and one in North Delhi.
One of the South Delhi cases was identified as serious. The individual suffered serious adverse reactions and was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences intensive care unit (AIIMS).
A security guard who was given a shot of Covaxin at AIIMS in New Delhi on Saturday was admitted to the hospital after having an allergic reaction as part of a “severe” after-immunization adverse event.
According to AIIMS Director Randeep Guleria, the AIIMS safety guard, who received the jab after 4 pm in his 20s, complained of palpitations and developed an allergic skin rash within 15-20 minutes after inoculation and was admitted to the hospital.
He was given Avil and Hydrocortisone and, when his condition did not improve, was finally admitted to the ICU. Around half an hour after the initial stabilisation, his symptoms deteriorated. As per the guidelines, his condition has been graded as extreme AEFI.
“He was immediately managed with appropriate treatment and he improved. He is stable. As a precautionary measure, he has been admitted for overnight observation and his condition is being monitored. He is likely to be discharged in the morning,” said Guleria.
In order to counteract a sensation of tightness in the abdomen, two healthcare workers who also exhibited adverse events were discharged 30 minutes later and given intravenous medication.
The government of Delhi announced that on Saturday, 4,319 healthcare and frontline employees were vaccinated against coronavirus. Most hospitals have refused to vaccinate at least 100 healthcare employees and frontline staff. 32 healthcare staff were vaccinated at the LNJP hospital, while 42 at the Rajiv Gandhi Super Specialty hospital, 46 at the Delhi Cancer State Institute and 31 at the RML hospital were given the dose.
After Prime Minister Narendra Modi kickstarted the vaccination drive, the Union Health Ministry said that as many as 1,91,182 individuals were vaccinated on Saturday. 16,755 vaccinators participated in the operation, the ministry said.
