The Delhi High Court on Wednesday said that it is mandatory to wear a mask in a private car even when the driver is alone in a car, as a vehicle is considered a public place, after dismissing four petitions challenging the collection of fine in cars when the drivers were found without a mask.
The bench of Justice Pratibha M Singh said a mask acts as Suraksha Kavach, which would prevent the spread of the deadly virus.
On Tuesday, India detected 115,736 new cases of the novel coronavirus that is the highest daily spike so far.
There are now 8,43,473 active cases of Covid-19 caseload in India. However, at least 630 deaths were reported on Tuesday that took the toll to 1,66,177, and about half of the cases have been reported from Maharashtra. Punjab, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, and Karnataka were the other states which reported the large number of deaths.

Nearly 55,000 cases were detected in Maharashtra, while Chhattisgarh scaled a new peak of 9,921 cases. Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi reported more than 5,000 cases each.
The Centre on Tuesday said India’s Covid-19 cases were “spreading faster than last time”, and the next four weeks would be “critical” in controlling the second wave of the disease.
Dr. V K Paul, who heads India’s Covid-19 task force, said people’s participation would be vital. World Health Organization Chief Scientist Dr Soumya Swaminathan has cautioned against a full lockdown, telling The Indian Express that “the consequences are terrible.”
Amid the surge in infections, Delhi has imposed a night curfew, from 10 pm to 5 am, till April 30; Pune is facing an acute shortage of Intensive Care Units (ICUs) and ventilators; and active cases in the Mumbai Police force has more than doubled in the last fortnight, rising from 155 on March 22 to 408 till Monday night.
