Heart procedures can be extremely complicated even for the highly skilled doctors, and one way to reduce risks is for a hospital to have a Hybrid Operating system, where cardiology and cardiac surgery procedures can be done in the same operation room specially in this pandemic situation COVID free environment is a priority for lot of patients.
Recently, a 62-year-old patient came from Mumbai with severe calcified blockage and Diabetes mellitus, EF-30-35% moderate MR, mild TR, and CAG LM with Triple vessel disease.
At RHL hospital, the doctors examined him and concluded that the patient is suffering from high risk blockages and failing heart was at a high risk for surgery.
An angiogram revealed all his arteries were more than 90% blocked with very hard, calcium deposited life threatening blockages. The doctors were left with no other option except performing a rare surgery using a miniaturized pump “Impella”, which is a motorized pump that helps in blood circulation to the body organs. It is inserted via leg arteries. It is a small device which is just like a catheter and works on the principle of submersible water pump.
Chairman RHL Heart Centre doctor Ravinder Singh Rao who performed the minimal invasive Procedure, said, “It was an extremely high-risk angioplasty with Rotablation which was performed. It would have not been impossible to do the procedure with safety without the support of the device.”
In the procedure, which was performed the doctors removed the calcium followed by implantation of four stents in a procedure lasting for two hours.
Dr Rao said that once in position, the heart pump withdraws blood from the left ventricle and expels it in to the ascending aorta, the same effect that happens with the pumping motion of your heart.
