Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on the occasion of World Patient Safety Day launched guidelines, schemes and initiatives to increase the efficiency and quality of health services offered to patients in health institutions.
Every year, 17th September is observed as the World Patient Safety Day which aims to raise awareness about patient’s health and reduce errors made during treatment that can potentially harm the patient. One of the common causes of deaths worldwide is medical negligence that makes it essential for health organizations around the world to act on it and take all plausible steps to prevent any further harm due to negligence or preventable errors.

The health minister today congratulated the states and UTs for successful implementation of National Quality Assurance standards and Labour Room Quality Improvement Initiative (LaQshya) in public health institutions. This not only ensures the right treatment for the patients but also strengthens people’s trust in public healthcare institutions, he stated.
The theme chosen for this year’s patient safety day is ‘Safety in maternal and new-born care’ to promote safe maternal and newborn care as a rising number of women die due to preventable causes during pregnancy.
A steep increase can also be observed in the number of avoidable stillbirths due to unavailability of pre-natal and post-natal care. The theme promotes skilled care for women before and after birth in order to prevent pregnancy related complications and deaths.
