Having a new-born can be both a magnificent and stressful time. These bundles of joy bring with them their own demands and needs. However, living in the 21st century ideally comes with its own perks. Breastfeeding no longer should be all-consuming and there are a variety of products and accessories to make the experience smoother and more comfortable. However, due to the plethora of options available in the market, a new parent may find it difficult to understand the exact benefit and need for various accessories.
Here is a guide to help a new parent, especially a father to manoeuvre through the process of selecting breastfeeding accessories for the new mom and baby:
1. Nursing bras
Nursing Bras are specialised bras that provide support to lactating mothers. It also allows for a comfortable breastfeeding experience since the mothers do not have to remove their brassieres every time the infant needs to be fed. (which ranges from every 20 mins to 3 hours, depending on the age of the infant and several other factors). A nursing bra also includes specially designed bra cups that have flaps which can be handy to open it with a single hand to expose the nipple.
2. Breast pumps
Breast pumps have been around for some time now and mothers prefer using them for several reasons. There are many different types of breast pump available in the market such as manual, electric or hospital grade pumps. They can be used to remove milk from the breast and sometimes if the infant is not nursing or feeding like they are supposed to, breast pumps help build and maintain the supply of mother’s milk. A good quality breast pump can help in maintaining milk supply if the baby is too premature or sick to breastfeed. It can also come in handy for a nursing mother who travels a lot or stays away from the infant for a long duration for other reasons.
3. Breast milk storage bags and containers
Breast milk storage bags and containers are made specially for mothers who need to collect and store milk for their infant. Working mothers, or mothers who are over lactating prefer to store the milk for future use. They are in fact treated as a necessity for mothers who are planning on pumping their milk. These products do not harm the milk stored in them and are designed in such a way that they can withstand freezing and thawing when needed. They can safely store the milk for a long period of time.
4. Nipple Shields
Generally used when the infant is struggling to latch on, or if the mother is suffering from sore nipples. All the mother has to do is soak the shield in warm water and gently stretch the raised portion of the sheild on to the breast, while ensuring that the nipple and the areola are placed in the raised portion of the shield.
There are several kinds of nipple shields available in the market. However, it is important to remember that these are a short-term solution that make feeding easier for mother. If the pain does not go away for the mother, it is recommended to consult a lactation or breastfeeding specialist.
5. Breastfeeding Pillows
Breastfeeding pillows provides support and helps in reducing neck, arm and back strain for the mother, which can make nursing a more enjoyable experience. These pillows are especially helpful for mothers with large breasts, those recovering from C-sections or nursing twins.
Having the above accessories handy can make the entire breastfeeding journey a lot easier for your wife, and your new-born. Beyond that, though, try not to worry too much, because it seems like you are already off to a great start!
