As a breastfeeding mother, every woman goes through a plethora of changes in her body. Breastfeeding is believed to generate a unique link between a mother and her child, and every mother is wary of any foreign drugs during this period. The COVID 19 vaccine has provided a ray of hope for billions of people throughout the world in the fight against the virus, but breastfeeding mothers have been under a constant dilemma about taking the vaccine. Considering the early stages of the vaccine it is normal for anyone to have apprehensions about its side effects but paranoia is especially acute when caring for a newborn baby.
Most breastfeeding mothers are facing a serious dilemma with respect to vaccination. The main apprehensions are regarding the effect of the vaccine and the subsequent impact it can have on the infant. ICMR has assured that breastfeeding mothers can be safely vaccinated without any major side effects. It is also possible for a breastfeeding mother to transfer antibodies to a newborn through breast milk. These antibodies could help in building relative immunity against the deadly virus and substantially help the children fight the virus.
Several incorrect misconceptions have circulated, claiming that one must stop breastfeeding for a couple of days post-vaccination, which are not medically supported or proven. On the contrary, it is extremely important for infants below the age of six months to be fed with breast milk as it is the primary source of nutrition and is considered as the main source of food.
The data currently available through studies show that impacts of the COVID-19 vaccine taken by breastfeeding mothers on their babies are unsubstantial. The constituents of any vaccine entering through the breastmilk could dissolve quickly just after the milk has been digested by the infant.
However, like any other vaccine, the COVID-19 vaccine also has certain risks associated with it.
Lactating mothers or expectant mothers should consult the obstetrician before vaccination and plan the process based on the individual medical history. If there has been a history of an extreme reaction to any vaccine or constituents, one may discuss the same with the obstetrician.
Conclusion
As a mother to a newborn, it is very normal to have certain reservations against a new vaccine or drug. But awareness plays a crucial role in the fight against this deadly virus and it is imperative for breastfeeding mothers to understand the process of vaccination. Doctors can explain the potential side effects if any and can also suggest ways to manage them.
