Despite the fact that coronavirus is considered an illness of the lungs and many patients who contract the new Covid-19 experience cardiac issues.
According to early evidence, up to 1 in 5 patients with coronavirus have signs of heart injury irrespective of the fact that whether or not they had any respiratory symptoms. Though most of these patients already had underlying health issues like heart disease or high blood pressure, many otherwise healthy patients had also developed heart problems, including blood vessel injuries, blood clots, arrhythmia, strokes, and heart attacks.
Incidence of cardiac problems in patients is very high in patients who contract Covid-19.
Several types of research have been conducted which suggests that the extensive inflammation of the infection causes a possibility that the virus directly infects and damages the cardiovascular system, and this stress which is already there on the infection puts on the preexisting heart conditions.
However, a new study has been published in the Journal of Emergency Medicine in mid-May that evaluated 45 percent of reports pertaining to coronavirus and cardiovascular complications. It was found that Covid-19 can cause lasting heart damages.
In an exclusive interaction with Healthwire, Dr. Prashant Kumar Chaudhary, Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon, and Dr. Harimohan Kumar, Medical Officer at PMCH explain how a respiratory infection that Covid-19 is, inflicts so much damage to the heart:
“Heart attack is a condition when your coronaries get blocked and when the major blood vessels that supply your heart become damaged or diseased. Now coronavirus has caused symptoms that increase the inflammatory markers in your body which leads to clogging of blood cells and if these clots gets into terminal arteries they damage the function of any organ, among which is the heart. Therefore, patients with underlying heart diseases are more prone to heart attacks,” said, Dr. Prashant Kumar Chaudhary, Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon.
