New Delhi, 20th August: A sudden surge in mpox cases globally has put India on high alert, with the country closely monitoring the situation and taking proactive measures to prevent an outbreak. To assess the prevailing scenario and formulate a comprehensive response strategy, Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary P K Mishra chaired a high-level meeting to review the preparedness for Mpox amid enhanced surveillance for prompt detection.
Mpox Outbreak In India: Has It Already Entered The Country?
Health officials across the country are on high alert, with intensified surveillance measures in place at airports and other entry points. The government is leaving no stone unturned to prevent a potential mpox outbreak within India’s borders. “No reported case of Mpox in the country as of now, and the risk of a large outbreak with sustained transmission is low, as per the current assessment,” said officials.

The World Health Organisation has declared Mpox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern in view of its prevalence and spread across many parts of Africa. As per an earlier statement from WHO, 99,176 cases and 208 deaths had been reported due to Mpox from 116 countries globally since 2022.

Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary P K Mishra said, “Presently 32 labs are equipped for testing. Protocols for prevention and treatment of the disease should be disseminated on a large scale, stressing that an awareness campaign among healthcare providers regarding the signs and symptoms of the disease and the need for timely notification to the surveillance system”.
