Amid Maharashtra is trying to ease the tough restrictions for few months, three deaths from the Delta Plus variant of Covid-19 has been recorded in the state, among which Mumbai sees the first death.
On July 27, a 63-year-old woman who died is reported to be Mumbai’s first Delta Plus death. The next who died from Delta plus variant has been reported to be from Raigad who was 69-year-old following an 80-year-old woman from Ratnagiri who died last month.
According to officials, the Mumbai woman had tested positive on July 21, had several comorbidities including diabetes. Although she was fully vaccinated and was among the seven patients in the city whose reports turned out positive for the Delta Plus which is reported to be a mutation of the highly infectious Delta variant that drove the deadly second wave of Covid in the month of April and May.
The results of genome sequencing from the woman’s samples arrived on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Mumbai’s civic body BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) started contacting tracing the seven patients after receiving the results from the state health department.
She had no travel history but two of her close contacts have tested positive for the Delta plus variant of coronavirus. Although the officials said, the woman was on oxygen support and was administered steroids and Remdesivir, according to officials.
Along with seven samples from Mumbai, 13 more have tested positive for the Delta Plus variant across Maharashtra, according to the state government. Three cases are in Pune, two each in Nanded, Gondia, Raigad and Palghar, and one each in Chandrapur and Akola.
Moreover, the mutant Covid strain was also found in seven children and eight senior citizens so far. However, health department officials of Maharashtra are trying to track people who have recently come into contact with infected patients.
The central government on Wednesday said the Delta Plus has been detected in 86 cases across the country but there is no “exponential surge” so far.
