Kanpur, January 14-In a development which could determine the hearing of the high-profile Unnao rape case, Doctor Prashant Upadhyay, who had once treated the father of the Unnao rape survivor, has died, a day before the hearing of the case.
A report in The Times of India claimed that Dr Upadhyay died after complaining of breathlessness. According to his family members, he wasn’t feeling well on Monday.
“He was rushed to the Unnao district hospital, where doctors declared him dead,” the report quoted his relative Pawan Tiwari, as saying. Dr. Upadhyay’s body has been shifted to mortuary for postmortem. Dr. Upadhyay was struggling with diabetes for the past one year.
“According to Dr Upadhyay’s family members, he was unwell. It is a case of natural death. However, as there were talks that he died under mysterious circumstances, an autopsy with the consent of his family members was conducted by a panel of doctors and the report is awaited,” the report quoted ACP Vinod Kumar Panday as saying.
At the time when Unnao survivor’s father was brought to Unnao district hospital after he was attacked and sustained a head injury, Dr. Upadhyay was serving as an Emergency Medical Officer there. It was him who had given clearance to the police for taking survivor’s father to jail where he had died.
Later, when the CBI probe began in the case, the doctor was suspended on April 12, 2018. However, he was reinstated after a period of nine months.
