Adenovirus Alarm: Four more children have died because of adenovirus in West Bengal. With this, the number of deaths because of adenovirus has risen to 40 in the last nine days in the state. Health officials are worried about it as the recent deaths suggest that the situation is assuming alarming proportions.
18-month-old Atifa Khatun and 40-year-old Aarman Gazi died at the B.C. Roy Children’s Hospital on Sunday morning. By 4 p.m., four more child deaths were reported from the same hospital. This took the number of deaths to six in a single day.

While people aware of the development have confirmed these four deaths of children, their identities have not been disclosed. All the children who reportedly lost their lives in the last few hours were under treatment with typical adenovirus symptoms.
Adenovirus Symptoms
Some of the very common symptoms of adenovirus are fever, cough and breathing problems. There are around 40 deaths apparently because of adenovirus. The treatment given to these children failed to result in any sign of recovery.
The flu-like conditions include cold, fever, breathing problems, sore throat, pneumonia, and acute bronchitis.

According to reports, adenovirus can spread through skin contact. It can also spread by air through coughing and sneezing and even through an infected person’s stools. So far, there are no approved medicines or any specific treatment line to treat the virus.
State Health Department Issues Advisory
Considering the situation, the state Health Department has already issued an advisory. The advisory, for doctors, especially paediatricians, tells them to take special care of children who are being hospitalised with flu-like symptoms.

Extra care is needed in cases where children are aged two years or below. This is because those below the age of 2 years are most vulnerable to being affected by adenovirus.
