New Delhi, 25 November 2024: The AICC RCOG has emphasized the need to make HPV vaccination mandatory as part of national immunization programs. Their recommendation grounded in evidence that shows the vaccine’s high efficacy in reducing the incidence of cervical cancer and other HPV-related diseases.
The committee believes that mandatory vaccination policies can ensure greater coverage. Particularly in underserved communities where the burden of cervical cancer is highest.
A senior member of AICC RCOG, stated, “The HPV vaccine is a game-changer in cancer prevention. We must take decisive action to protect our young girls and women from this entirely preventable disease. Mandatory vaccination is a step in the right direction.”
What is Cervical Cancer?
Cervical cancer starts in the cervix, the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. And it mainly caused by a long-term infection with high-risk types of HPV. This cancer leads to more than 300,000 deaths globally each year, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where screening and treatment can be hard to access.
The Role of HPV in Cervical Cancer
HPV is a sexually transmitted virus, with certain strains being well-known for causing cervical cancer. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), almost all cases of cervical cancer are associated with HPV. By using effective preventive measures like vaccination, we can significantly lower the rates of cervical cancer.

The rates of cervical cancer are troublingly high in many areas, especially in India. The Global Cancer Observatory reports that India sees about 97,000 new cases every year, placing it among the countries with the biggest challenges regarding cervical cancer. By making HPV vaccination mandatory, we can greatly reduce these figures by preventing the initial infections that lead to cancer.
Effectiveness of the HPV Vaccine
Research has demonstrated that the HPV vaccine is very effective in preventing infections from the most harmful strains of the virus. It can reduce the likelihood of developing cervical cancer by up to 90%. AICC RCOG is advocating for mandatory vaccination to ensure that all young girls are safeguarded before they become sexually active.
Addressing Concerns and Misconceptions
Despite the overwhelming evidence in favor of the HPV vaccine, hesitancy and misinformation continue to pose challenges. Concerns about vaccine safety, side effects, and its association with sexual activity have hindered its acceptance in many communities. The AICC RCOG stresses the importance of public awareness campaigns to address these misconceptions and highlight the vaccine’s proven safety record.
The World Health Organization (WHO) and other global health bodies have extensively validated the HPV vaccine as safe and effective. Reported side effects are usually mild, such as pain at the injection site or a slight fever, and serious adverse effects are extremely rare.
The Way Forward
The AICC RCOG’s call for mandatory HPV vaccination is a pivotal step in the fight against cervical cancer. Policymakers must act urgently to integrate the vaccine into public health strategies, ensuring equitable access for all, especially in rural and underserved areas.
Investing in HPV vaccination is not merely a healthcare expense; it is a transformative move toward a healthier future. Coupled with routine screening and public education, this initiative can eliminate cervical cancer as a public health threat.
