The tenure of Dr Randeep Guleria as the director of AIIMS ends today. On Tuesday the selection committee chaired a meeting with the Union health secretary met to discuss all potential candidates.
According to sources reported in TOI, “Further deliberations will be held to decide on the list of candidates to be sent to the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet. Till then, an official or acting director will be given the charge.”
For this post, more than 30 top doctors across the country have applied which includes 17 faculty members from the institute itself, including AIIMS Trauma Centre chief Dr Rajesh Malhotra, professor and endocrinology department head Dr Nikhil Tandon and neurology department head Dr M V Padma Srivastava. Not only that Dr Balram Bhargava, the current director-general of Indian Council of Medical Research and the director-general of health services, Dr Sunil Kumar, have also applied.
According to the AIIMS rules, an applicant should have 25 years of experience in the field of medicine.
He or she also needs to have widespread practical and administrative understanding in the fields of medical relief, medical education/research or public health organisation, and adequate experience of running an important scientific-educational institution either as its head or head of a department
The upper age limit is 62 years. The new director will have to serve a term of five years from the date of assuming the charge or till he turns 65, whichever is earlier.
