Free Treatment of Rs. 61,501 Crore Provided under AB PM-JAY Scheme
New Delhi, May 31, 2023: The Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) has achieved a significant milestone by facilitating 5 crore hospital admissions, amounting to a total cost of Rs. 61,501 crore under the scheme. The flagship program, implemented by the National Health Authority (NHA), aims to provide health cover of Rs. 5 lakhs per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization to 12 crore beneficiary families.
Elaborating on this achievement, the CEO of NHA stated, “AB PM-JAY was launched with the vision to achieve Universal Health Coverage. The scheme has significantly reduced the out-of-pocket expenditure for medical treatments and has brought relief to numerous beneficiaries from poor and vulnerable families. This year, we have witnessed several accomplishments, from issuing Ayushman Cards to beneficiaries to achieving 100% fund utilization and authorization of 1.65 crore hospital admissions.”
AB PM-JAY has been successfully implemented in 33 states and union territories, benefiting 23.39 crore verified beneficiaries who have been issued Ayushman Cards for availing free treatment under the scheme. The program boasts a network of 28,351 empaneled hospitals, including 12,824 private hospitals, across the country. Notably, approximately 56% of the total admissions have been authorized in private hospitals, while 44% have taken place in public hospitals.
The scheme covers a wide range of medical procedures under 27 different specialties, with top treatments including medical oncology, emergency care, orthopedics, and urology. Moreover, AB PM-JAY emphasizes gender equity in access to quality healthcare, with 49% of Ayushman Card recipients being women. Over 48% of the total authorized hospital admissions have been availed by women, and 141 medical procedures are exclusively earmarked for women.
The AB PM-JAY scheme has proven instrumental in providing financial security and quality healthcare to millions of families in need. As it continues to evolve and expand, it stands as a testament to India’s commitment to achieving Universal Health Coverage.
