Bird Flu Scare In Delhi As Unusual Mortality Of 16 Birds Reported From West Delhi

Sixteen birds were found dead at a Delhi park on Friday, authorities said, it is the possible arrival of bird flu in the national capital. The unusual death comes in the wake of reports of bird flu originating from six states.

The Delhi government’s animal husbandry department has reportedly taken precautions and sent samples to the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases said the Union ministry of fisheries, animal husbandry, and dairying. The test report is awaited.

The government asked the public and farmers to be careful and avoid any misinformation about consuming chicken and eggs. “Awareness among poultry farmers and the public (consumers of eggs and chicken) about the disease is of foremost importance. Communication from the secretary, animal husbandry department, has also been sent to health ministry to restore consumer confidence in consumption of chicken and eggs,” the Union ministry of fisheries, animal husbandry, and dairying said.

It has also requested the health ministry to issue advisories so that rumours do not affect consumer confidence.

States have been requested to raise awareness regarding the safety of consuming poultry or poultry products after boiling/cooking, for which central support would be available, the government said. So far, the disease has been confirmed from Kerala, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Gujarat.
