New Delhi, Aug 7: Senior BJP leader and former Union External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj died after suffering a cardiac arrest at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences on Tuesday , authorities confirmed.
Swaraj, 67, who did not contest the 2019 Lok Sabha election due on health grounds after undergoing a kidney replacement surgery in 2016, was brought to the AIIMS around 9.15 pm on Tuesday after she suffered a cardiac arrest.
While a team of five doctors at the emergency department of the AIIMS attended the BJP leader, she did not respond to the treatment and hence was declared dead.
“She was declared dead after the doctors tried to revive her through CPR and other medical procedures,” a senior doctor told healthwire.
Several leaders including the PM Narendra Modi visited the hospital.
“A glorious chapter in Indian politics comes to an end. India grieves the demise of a remarkable leader who devoted her life to public service and bettering lives of the poor. Sushma Swaraj Ji was one of her kind, who was a source of inspiration for crores of people,” Modi tweeted.
Swaraj, the first Chief Minister of Delhi after it’s formation and later the leader of opposition in Lok Sabha during the UPA regime, was not keeping well for sometime and was a heavy diabetic.
She leaves her husband and her daughter and son-in- law behind her.
