IIT Kanpur Researchers Unveil New Insights into G Protein-Coupled Receptors

Kanpur, 24 May 2023: Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT-K) have made a significant breakthrough in understanding the intricate workings of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), a vital class of drug targets. Their study, published in the prestigious international journal Molecular Cell, has unveiled a previously unknown mechanism that regulates these receptors, opening up new possibilities for drug discovery and improving existing treatments.

Visualizing the Interaction between GPCRs and Arrestins

GPCRs play a crucial role in regulating heart function, blood pressure, mental disorders, and human behavior. They are targeted by numerous drugs used for various medical conditions. The researchers at IIT Kanpur focused on understanding the interaction between GPCRs and arrestins, another group of proteins that control the function and responses of GPCRs. However, until now, this interaction has remained largely elusive.

Utilizing the cutting-edge cryogenic-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) technology, the team at IIT Kanpur successfully visualized the cross talk between GPCRs and arrestins in exceptional detail. This breakthrough allowed them to identify a novel mechanism responsible for regulating the function of GPCRs within the human body. By unraveling this intricate interaction, the researchers have laid the foundation for developing improved medicines with reduced side effects and discovering new treatments for various human diseases.

Promising Implications for Medical Advancements

Prof. Arun K Shukla, the leader of the research team, highlights the significance of the study’s findings. He explains that the chemokine receptor studied in their research has critical implications for breast cancer progression, while the complement receptors investigated are vital targets for treating inflammatory disorders like rheumatoid arthritis. These discoveries open up new avenues for developing targeted therapies and improving patient outcomes.

Collaboration for Future Drug Discovery

Building on their groundbreaking study, the researchers at IIT Kanpur are now collaborating with several international laboratories to explore novel drug discovery approaches. By combining their expertise and resources, they aim to translate their findings into practical applications and further advance the field of medicine.

The study conducted by IIT Kanpur researchers has unveiled a previously unknown mechanism governing the function of G protein-coupled receptors. This breakthrough not only enhances our understanding of cellular signaling but also holds great potential for the development of new drugs and improvements to existing medications. With their ongoing research and collaboration, these scientists are at the forefront of pioneering advancements in drug discovery.
