Diabetic retinopathy is a serious ailment in which the blood vessels in the retina get damaged as a result of diabetes. It is considered deleterious because, if not taken care of, it consequently leads to blindness.
There are certain evident symptoms of this ailment, some of which include blurred vision leading to difficulty in seeing and differentiating colors. Negligence can cause complete loss of vision making people blind.
The major factors causing this ailment are, prolonged high blood glucose level, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking, etc. which are the major reasons which cause hemorrhage of blood vessels and swelling in the retina.
The diabetic retinopathy level can be described through four stages namely- mild non-proliferative which is characterized by balloon-like swelling in the retina’s blood vessels, moderate non-proliferative in which a fluid build-up occurs in the retina, severe non-proliferative in which the blood vessels nourishing the eye get blocked and proliferative diabetic retinopathy which is the extreme stage of the disease in which the blood vessels begin to leak and bleed.
This leads to a retinal detachment which may further cause visual impairments like spotty vision or even complete loss of vision.
