In a significant move towards enhancing flood management in Assam, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, chaired a meeting emphasizing the need for coordinated efforts between the Centre and State health institutions. The meeting, held via video conference, focused on addressing health-related challenges arising from the recurring floods in Assam, ahead of the monsoon season.
Dr. Mandaviya underscored the importance of preparedness and collaboration between central and state health agencies to effectively manage flood situations. Recognizing the significance of critical care equipment, availability of clean drinking water, and the prevention of vector-borne and waterborne diseases in flood-affected regions, the Minister stressed the need for a robust flood-management model.
To facilitate efficient management of health emergencies, the Union Health Minister directed the officials to develop an online database containing vital information such as bed availability, oxygen supply, and other healthcare facilities. This comprehensive resource will aid in swift decision-making and coordination between healthcare providers during flood-related crises.

Dr. Mandaviya further emphasized the importance of well-equipped Health and Wellness Centres (HWCs) and adequate training for healthcare workers stationed in flood-prone areas. He urged the officials to ensure the availability of essential medicines, functional medical equipment, and other necessary amenities at these centers. Advanced training programs for Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs), Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs), and Community Health Officers (CHOs) will enhance their effectiveness in delivering healthcare services during emergency flood management.
During the meeting, Shri Avinash Joshi, Principle Secretary (Health), Assam, assured that all essential medicines are adequately stocked. Deputy Commissioners from six districts also pledged to regularly review preparedness measures to ensure effective flood management.
The Director-General of Health Services, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Atul Goel, informed the attendees that their regional offices are fully prepared to support the state government. Additionally, a team of specialists from premier medical institutes like AIIMS Guwahati and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) will be deployed to assist the state whenever required.
With the Centre pledging unwavering support for flood management in Assam, a coordinated approach between the central and state health agencies, coupled with proactive measures like online databases and trained healthcare workers, will be instrumental in combating vector-borne diseases during floods and ensuring the overall well-being of the affected communities.
