As the Covid-19 pandemic has created an unprecedented global impact on public health and health care. Covid and social distancing restrictions have also disrupted the delivery of routine health care across the country.
Dr Vaishya explained, “The Covid-19 pandemic is an unprecedented situation that has raised healthcare questions for patients of all ages and staying on top of your orthopaedic care is important. Although the Covid-19 pandemic presents many hurdles to delivering patient care, orthopaedic surgeons continue to provide safe and effective treatment in the midst of what has become the “new normal.” Your orthopaedic surgeon is able to help you in many different ways and can often do so without needing an in-person visit.”
He further explained, “Even as some surgeries begin to resume, your surgery might still be delayed. The most common injuries that bring our patients (and us) to the emergency room and hospital during this “shelter in place” era are broken hips in older adults and broken elbows in children. Based on the data that we have seen thus far, patients over the age of 65 and those with a prior history of cardiac or respiratory illnesses, diabetes, kidney disease, or immune suppressed conditions may be at a higher risk for Covid-19 complications.”
The best way to prevent injury is by having strong, flexible muscles and joints which resist strain and injury. Stretch slowly, and never do any exercise that causes pain. Patients with acute orthopaedic needs have other options than visiting the hospital. It is important for patients to consider telemedicine.
