Omicron Sub-Variants Confirmed in Tamil Nadu and Telangana
The Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) has announced the detection of the BA.4 and BA.5 sub-variants of the Omicron variant in India. A 19-year-old woman from Tamil Nadu and an 80-year-old man from Telangana tested positive for these sub-variants. Both individuals had no travel history and have shown only mild clinical symptoms.
Fully Vaccinated Patients Affected
Despite being fully vaccinated, both patients contracted the BA.4 and BA.5 sub-variants. This highlights the importance of continued vigilance and adherence to safety measures, even for vaccinated individuals.
Sub-Variants’ Origins and Global Circulation
The BA.4 and BA.5 sub-variants were initially reported in South Africa and have since been detected in several countries worldwide. This raises concerns about the global spread of these new strains and the need for international cooperation in monitoring and containing their transmission.
Reassurance from INSACOG
INSACOG has stated that, based on current data, the BA.4 and BA.5 sub-variants have not been linked to severe disease or increased hospitalization. However, continuous monitoring and research are essential to understand their impact fully.
Contact Tracing Underway
In response to the confirmed cases, authorities have initiated contact tracing as a precautionary measure. Identifying and monitoring potential contacts will help prevent further spread and contain the sub-variants’ transmission.
Currently, there is no evidence to suggest that these sub-variants are associated with severe disease outcomes or increased hospitalizations. However, as a precautionary measure, contact tracing of the patients is underway.
It’s important to continue monitoring the situation and follow public health guidelines to contain the spread of the virus and protect public health.
