Cancer is a frightening word for many people. When someone is diagnosed with cancer, it often feels like the end of the road, especially for those who may struggle to access healthcare.

At just 16 years old, Maya noticed a small swelling on the back of her left thigh that had been there since her school days. Initially, it was ignored by her and the doctors she consulted. Recently, the swelling grew rapidly, making it hard for Maya to walk, run, or jump. It became painful and caused numbness in her leg.

Seeking help, Maya went to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, known for its compassionate care and providing advanced medical treatment free of cost to those in need. Dr. Chintamani, Chairman of the Department of Surgical Oncology, took her case. Tests showed Maya had a soft tissue tumor completely surrounding her left sciatic nerve, crucial for leg function.

The tumor posed a serious threat. Removing it without harming the nerve was unlikely, raising the possibility of amputation to save Maya’s life. Despite hearing this, Maya remained brave, though she struggled with depression. The surgical team, led by Dr. Chintamani, was determined to save her limb unless absolutely necessary.

Maya underwent extensive assessments and counseling, preparing for either limb-sparing surgery or amputation. Ultimately, prioritizing her life, Maya chose surgery. After an intense 8-hour operation, Dr. Chintamani successfully removed the tumor while preserving Maya’s sciatic nerve. The tumor, weighing about 2 kilograms, also required removing part of her thigh muscles.

After surgery, Maya experienced temporary weakness in her leg muscles, which improved with physiotherapy. Today, she visits the hospital for check-ups and therapy, walking without significant issues.

Maya’s journey not only highlights the dedication of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital’s cancer team in providing exceptional care, but also her own courage at such a young age. Her recovery brought immense joy to her family and the hospital staff.

This story is a testament to compassion and resilience, showing how medical care and a young girl’s strength can save a life and inspire hope.
