They emphasized that maintaining a healthy liver requires early preventive measures rather than shortcuts.
The Role of Lifestyle in Liver Health
Health experts presented various sessions on improving liver health, focusing on lifestyle changes that can make a significant difference. They stressed the importance of giving up alcohol, maintaining a healthy weight, controlling sugar intake, exercising regularly, and adopting a balanced diet.
Debunking the Detox Myth
Many people turn to social media for liver detox recipes, but experts caution against this. As Dr. Rajeev Jayadevan, Chairman of Kerala State IMA Research Cell, explained: “Homemade recipes claimed on social media to be liver detoxifiers have no scientific validity. Many people use the term detox in modern times because it is associated with the ancient belief of cleansing the mind of toxic thoughts, but it is not possible to cleanse the liver through such shortcuts.”
The Liver’s Natural Detox Process
The liver, the body’s largest organ, functions like a chemistry lab, filtering beneficial and harmful substances that enter the stomach. Experts noted that the liver is naturally capable of cleansing itself, making it unnecessary to rely on external detox methods. However, they warned that early-stage liver disease often shows no symptoms, underscoring the importance of proactive lifestyle choices.
Experts at the convention highlighted the growing problem of fatty liver disease due to alcohol consumption and unhealthy lifestyles. They urged the public to adopt preventive lifestyle measures rather than seeking shortcuts. Dr. Mathew Philip, President of the Indian Society of Gastroenterology (ISG), inaugurated the session, reinforcing the importance of these messages.
