Frozen shoulders: When should you see your doctor

Frozen Shoulders is a condition where the shoulder joints become stiff and movement in the joints cause pain. 2-3% of people in India have the problem of Frozen shoulders but it is most commonly seen from the age of 40-70 years. It is very rare to find it in the younger generation but that too is seen after certain injuries. To Learn more about it we spoke with Dr. Gurinder Bedi, a well-known orthopaedic doctor in Delhi.

Dr. Bedi explains that frozen shoulders has different stages, mainly three stages, in the first stage the individual might experience acute pain and the inability to move their shoulders, however in the initial stage, the full range of passive movements is possible, by the second stage the individual restriction in movement when it comes to both passive and active movement of the arm, and by the third stage the individual might experience very limited movement of arms. Frozen shoulders has mainly been seen in the older generation but an injury can also lead to frozen shoulders.

According to Dr. Bedi frozen shoulders is a disease of limited duration and it is resolved in 1-2 years. However, there are some people who are more likely to get frozen shoulders, one such group is patients who have thyroid, which forms the biggest group. Other groups which are more likely to get frozen shoulders are, diabetic patients, alcoholics, smokers and people with epilepsy.

Dr. Bedi says that there are medications available for the early stages of frozen shoulders, making it important to recognise which stage you are in so you can prevent it from getting worse, also physiotherapy can help with improving the condition of frozen shoulders. There are also simple surgeries that can be done to help with the frozen shoulders, if necessary.
