The government may allow self- registration on Covid Vaccine Intelligence Network (CoWIN) platform and those with comorbidities by the ederly for faster and easier enrolment of people to receive a shot of the covid-19 vaccine.
An Aadhaar-based enrolment process is likely to be rolled out for the elderly and those with comorbidities on the CoWIN platform, which is set to be incorporated with the widely used Aarogya Setu app.
The CoWIN platform will now allow the public to access its limited features, only for those who are required for enrolment and vaccination and not the ones with complex back-end operations, on the Aarogya Setu app, according to the reports accessed by Hindustan Times.
There have been some teething issues with the backbone of the vaccination efforts– server issues etc for #CoWIN as reported in the media. The app by itself seems to be work in progress as evidenced by the call by MeITY to improve the platform (now extended to 18th Jan 2021) pic.twitter.com/eBLK9UXsE4

The app has been downloaded by more than 170 million users and is a single window interface for health-related updates to Covid-19.
According to an internal government note, this app would be used in the world’s largest vaccination drive, the note said, “There is no need to download any new app for vaccination purposes. This module will be activated soon, once the vaccination of frontline health workers is completed. Along with this, a feedback module through the rapid assessment system (RAS) developed by MeitY is also being integrated.”
MeitY is short form for the ministry of electronics and information technology.
However, so far door to door survey has been conducted by the government for contact tracing and for months last year its battle against the pandemic the government has thoroughly tracked covid-19 patients.

The experts believe the self registration process is to ensure fool- proof identification of deserving candidates for receiving the vaccine.
To digitally integrate various steps are complicated functions of CoWIN, right from the time the vaccine is out from the factory, till it is administered to a recipient.
However, the movement of each dose of vaccine at the appropriate temperature will be monitored. The note said, “Those who don’t have Aadhaar or can’t do Aadhaar authentication with OTP will be verified through mobile numbers and taking photographs.”
Also, a unique health ID will be generated for each individual for the registration of beneficiaries. A guideline for states added that the CoWIN portal (cowin.gov.in) might also be used for self-registration of the public. The CoWIN platform will also be used for creation of state and district level admins and the database of vaccinators and supervisors along with the management of material relevant to covid-19 vaccination and its allocation.
