In its first 100 days, the new government of India led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set a clear plan for the Union Health Ministry. Key highlights involves providing health coverage under the Ayushman Bharat scheme to all citizens aged 70 and above and rolling out the U-WIN portal nationwide to digitize routine vaccinations.
Ayushman Bharat for Seniors
A main objective is to extend the Ayushman Bharat health coverage to people over the age of 70. This plan, which was a crucial promise in the BJP’s election manifesto, will also include the transgender community. Ayushman Bharat, also known as the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), is a government scheme that aims to provide free health coverage to low-income families. By including seniors, the government hopes to offer more wide-ranging health protection to one of the most vulnerable groups in society.
U-WIN Portal for Vaccinations
Another significant initiative is the Pan-India rollout of the U-WIN portal, designed to keep digital records of routine vaccinations. Based on the successful Co-WIN platform used for COVID-19 vaccinations, U-WIN is currently being tested in two districts per state and Union Territory. It aims to ensure every vaccination event for children and pregnant women is recorded electronically. The portal will be linked to Co-WIN, allowing easy access to vaccination records using a registered mobile number.
Other Key Health Initiatives
The government’s 100-day plan includes several other health-focused measures:
1. National Health Claims Exchange: This platform will ensure faster processing of health insurance claims and better compatibility between different health systems.
2. Drone Services for Medical Essentials: Drones will be used to deliver medical supplies to difficult-to-reach areas, particularly from AIIMS and other major health institutes.
3. Cashless Treatment for Ex-Servicemen: This initiative aims to provide ex-servicemen with cashless treatment services, easing their access to healthcare.
4. Immediate Licenses for Food Businesses: To promote ease of doing business, select food businesses under the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) will receive immediate issuance of licenses or registrations.
5. Arogya Maitri Cubes: These health emergency units will be deployed in central government hospitals to handle health crises efficiently.
6. Support for BHU’s Institute of Medical Sciences: Financial support similar to that provided to AIIMS will be extended to this institute.
7. National Medical Register: A centralized database of all doctors in India will be created, providing each doctor with a unique identification number by the end of 2024. A pilot project is currently underway.
These health initiatives reflect the new government’s commitment to improving healthcare access and efficiency in India. By focusing on vulnerable populations and leveraging technology, the Union Health Ministry aims to make significant strides in public health within its first 100 days.
