Physical activity helps to improve lung capacity and overall respiratory function.

A groundbreaking achievement has emerged from the Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur (IITK), where a team of innovators has successfully devised an economical, discreet, and compact technology for continuous monitoring of lung health in patients.

This remarkable technological advancement was achieved through collaboration between inventors hailing from IIT-Kanpur, IIT-Kharagpur, and the International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Naya Raipur, with crucial financial support from the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).

The technology has already been patented and comprises an acoustic mask equipped with highly sensitive sound sensors, along with an intelligent corded device capable of capturing inaudible breathing sounds emanating from the user’s mouth and nose.

The corded device incorporates a Wi-Fi module to transmit real-time lung health updates to healthcare providers. Furthermore, it boasts an enduring battery that ensures uninterrupted monitoring, a local storage unit for archiving processed audio data for long-term analysis, and an integrated processing unit complete with memory and microprocessor.

In a separate development, the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur recently entered into a partnership with InterDigital Inc., a US-based company specializing in mobile and video technology research and development. Together, they will work on developing 6G enabling technologies that will significantly influence future wireless standards. InterDigital, a Nasdaq-listed firm, will sponsor research and innovation at IIT-Kanpur aimed at advancing extreme (Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output) systems to enhance spectrum efficiency and expand network coverage, essential for the deployment of 6G networks.

Maintaining lung health is essential for overall well-being and quality of life. By adopting a healthy lifestyle and taking proactive measures to protect the lungs from harm, individuals can reduce the risk of lung diseases and enjoy better respiratory function.

Key factors that contribute to lung health include:

Healthy Lifestyle: Adopting a healthy lifestyle can significantly impact lung health. This includes not smoking or quitting smoking, as smoking is a leading cause of lung diseases such as lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Avoiding exposure to secondhand smoke is also crucial.

Regular Exercise: Physical activity helps to improve lung capacity and overall respiratory function. Aerobic exercises, in particular, can strengthen the muscles used for breathing.

Diet: A balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables provides essential nutrients and antioxidants that support lung health. Maintaining a healthy weight is also important, as obesity can strain the respiratory system.
