India’s cases of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) saw a jump of 53,476 in a day while the daily toll from the disease went up to 251, according to the data released by the Union ministry of health and family welfare on Thursday.
Since October 23 last year, this is the highest daily spike as 54,366 fresh cases were recorded. This takes the total case tally to 11.78 million and the fatality count that has been rising over the last few weeks, has gone up to 160,692.
The central government on Tuesday decided to open vaccination for everyone above 45 years of age from April 1, following the grim figures since the last few weeks.

A novel variant of the Sars-Cov-2 has been detected in seven states, and especially in high numbers in Maharashtra.
Experts said, the emergence of the new variant partially explains the surge in cases. However, the officials said that it may be too soon to arrive at a conclusion.
The cumulative number of COVID19 vaccine doses administered in the country has crossed 5.21 Crore today. As per the provisional report till 7 pm yesterday, a total of 5,21,97,380 vaccine doses have been given.
Two States – Maharashtra and Punjab are of grave concern which have shown recent surge in new cases.
Maharashtra reported highest 28,699 cases in last 24 hours followed by Punjab with 2,254 cases.

These include 79,56,925 HCWs who have taken the 1st dose and 50,47,927 HCWs who have taken the 2nd dose, 84,33,875 FLWs (1stdose), 32,02,183 FLWs (2nd dose), 2,26,01,622 beneficiaries more than 60 years old and 49,54,848 beneficiaries aged 45 and above with specific co-morbidities.
Total 13,54,976 vaccine doses were given till 7 pm today, the Sixty Eighth day of nationwide COVID19 vaccination.
Out of which 12,14,055 beneficiaries were vaccinated for 1st dose and 1,40,921 HCWs and FLWs received 2nd dose of vaccine as per the provisional report. Final reports would be completed for the day by late tonight.
