India’s healthcare prowess and technological advancements position the nation as a global leader in diabetes care
India is poised to become a frontrunner in technology-driven diabetes care, according to Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh. Speaking at the prestigious World Congress of “Diabetes Technology and Therapeutics 2023” (DTechCon 2023), Dr. Singh highlighted India’s healthcare achievements and technological advancements, which have gained global recognition.

Dr. Singh emphasized that India, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has witnessed significant advancements in technology and innovation. Since 2014, when there were just around 350 startups, the launch of the Startup scheme in 2016 led to a remarkable increase, with over 90,000 startups and more than 100 unicorns. India now ranks third in the global startup ecosystem.
The Minister also noted the significant strides made in the space and biotech sectors, with over 100 startups in the space industry within three years and the number of biotech startups increasing from 50 in 2014 to nearly 6,000 today. Furthermore, the recent approval of the National Quantum Mission will enhance medical diagnosis and treatment in the country.
Dr. Singh commended India’s excellence in telemedicine and its vast potential for medical tourism. He shared an example of a telemedicine van called “Doctor on Wheels” that provided consultations in remote villages, demonstrating the country’s commitment to providing accessible healthcare to all.
Acknowledging Prime Minister Modi’s focus on healthcare, Dr. Singh credited his personal interest and intervention for India’s successful management of the COVID-19 pandemic. India not only managed the pandemic better than smaller nations but also developed and supplied a DNA vaccine to other countries.

Dr. Singh stressed that as India leads diabetes research worldwide, preventing diabetes is not only a healthcare responsibility but also vital for nation-building, given India’s youthful population. With 70% of the population below the age of 40, it is crucial to avert complications arising from diabetes and related disorders.
The inaugural session of DTechCon 2023 brought together healthcare professionals, industry leaders, and startups working in health technology. The conference showcases the latest advancements in diabetes technology and therapeutics, providing a platform for workshops and hands-on training.
