The coronavirus pandemic has affected almost every aspect of our lives. The persistent lockdown, social distancing, Covid-19 protocols, wearing face masks have become our new normal and people are getting used to it. However, there is huge pressure on the healthcare system that is bothersome due to high mortality, poor economy, and morbidity.
Hence, we must bow down to our frontline warriors who are fighting the COVID-19 disease round the clock and are saving the lives of lakhs of people. Our doctors, nurses, and other healthcare staffers are under immense stress and pressure as the number of infections is just increasing. But our frontline workers have not given up and they still manage to provide services to Covid and non-covid patients.
Florence Nightingale on that day in 1820, perhaps the world’s most famous nurse – was born. On International Nurses Day, the entire nursing fraternity of the world pay respect to Florence Nightingale, an English nurse, a social reformer, and a founder of the key pillars of modern nursing.
On International Nurses Day, we bring to you some inspiring stories of nurses from all across the country who defied all the odds and came out during the pandemic to provide uninterrupted services to their patients.
The theme for this year’s International Nurses Day is Nurses: A Voice to Lead – A Vision for Future Healthcare. On this International Nursing Day all across the world people could not be more grateful to our nurses during the horrific coronavirus pandemic.
Nurses have played the most important role during this Covid-19 situation and have stood as the backbone of the hospitals and clinics especially in taking care of millions of Covid-19 patients for months by putting their lives at risk.
According to the WHO, ”nurses account for more than half of all the world’s health workers, yet there is an urgent shortage of nurses worldwide with 5.9 million (2020) more nurses still needed, especially in low- and middle-income countries”.
“I am COVID Warrior! Wearing a PPE kit is not easy but we are wearing PPE kits and giving good care to the patients during this time and more than that we are also providing psychological support to the patients to improve their mental status,” says Chikky, Staff Nurse at CISCO hospital.
“One fine day I received a letter from my department saying that I have to work in Covid care centre for few days, at that time I really got scared after reading the letter that how will I manage in the Covid Care, different thoughts started rising up in my mind that what if I get infected as I stay with my family but then my mother stood by me and encouraged me to focus on my job. So, I realized that my first duty is to serve my patients and now I am not all afraid in fact I am loving my job,” said, Srija Sanyal, a critical care nurse at Biswa Bangla Krirangan Covid CCU, West Bengal.
