New Delhi: The inauguration ceremony of “The Project for Provision of Medical Equipment for Leprosy Patients in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh”, under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects (GGP) scheme, was held on 14th February 2020, at Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh.The ceremony was attended by Dr. Ruby Marshala, Superintendent,Leprosy Mission Trust India, the recipient organization of this grant, and Mr. Naoki Kumagai, Minister (Political Affairs), from the Embassy of Japan in India.
The Grant Assistance for Grassroots Project scheme was established in 1989 to meet the diverse basic human needs in developing countries. The Government of Japan has supported India in projects such as construction of school buildings, vocational centers, and check dams, as well as provision of medical equipment. This project, which amounts to a total of approximately 8 Million Japanese Yen, has supported the purchase of medical equipment for treatment of leprosy patients in the area.
Leprosy Mission Trust India, the recipient organization of this project,established in 1874, has been contributing to the improvement of medical services for the poor leprosy patients from all over the country, by running a hospital and vocational training center.
The hospital has been facing an acute need to upgrade its equipment for treatment, given the deteriorated condition of their current equipment after many years of use. This project, through the purchase of new medical equipment, will enable the organization to deliver appropriate care for the approximately 10,000 poor leprosy patients, and help improve the quality of health and life of the patients from weaker sections of the society.The Government of Japan hopes that this project will contribute to improving the medical environment for the leprosy patients in the project areas,and will further develop the friendly and cooperative relationship between Japan and India.
