New Delhi, September 04: The Karnataka government on Tuesday notified dengue fever as an epidemic disease. The government has also amended the regulations of the Karnataka Epidemic Diseases Regulations, 2020.
“In exercise of power conferred by Section 3, of the Karnataka Epidemic Diseases Act, 2020. The Government of Karnataka hereby notifies Dengue fever. Including severe forms of severe fever, as an epidemic disease, the state,” read a notification.
Following the amendment, the authorities across the state will now have the power to impose fines on violations. The provision was existing only in Bengaluru and Mangaluru civic agencies till now.
Dengue Cases On The Rise In India
The decision to classify this virus infection induced fever as an epidemic comes in response to the increasing number of cases reported across the state. Health officials have observed a significant surge in dengue infections. Particularly in urban areas, which has put a strain on the healthcare system.
Dengue fever, if left untreated, can lead to severe complications such as hemorrhagic fever (DHF) and shock syndrome (DSS), which can be fatal. The rapid spread of the disease poses a serious threat to public health, and the government’s declaration aims to address the situation proactively.
What Is Government Doing To Stop The Spread?
To combat the DN outbreak, the Karnataka government has implemented several initiatives, including:
- Increased surveillance: The state health department has intensified surveillance efforts to track the spread of this fever and identify hotspots.
- Vector control measures: Extensive measures taken to control the mosquito population, which transmits the this mosquito-borne disease virus. This includes fogging, larviciding, and community awareness campaigns.
- Healthcare preparedness: Hospitals and clinics across the state equipped to handle it cases, ensuring adequate medical facilities and supplies.
- Public awareness campaigns: The government is conducting public awareness campaigns to educate the public about dengue fever, its symptoms, and preventive measures.

The government has also stipulate a fine of Rs 400 in urban and Rs 200 in rural areas in households — both indoor and outdoor if mosquito breeding is found.
