In the early hours of August 9, 2024. A young postgraduate student of chest medicine was brutally rape and kill. While on duty at R G Kar Medical College in Kolkata. This horrifying crime has shocked the entire nation and sparked widespread outrage, particularly among the medical community. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) took a big step against this crime.
Nationwide Protests and Strikes
Following this tragic event, resident doctors across the country. Gone on strike to demand justice and better safety measures for healthcare workers. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has also organize protests and candlelight marches to express their solidarity with the victim and her family.
IMA about Mishandling of the Investigation
The response to this crime by the college authorities and local police has been widely criticized. After the first day, the investigation seemed to stall. Raising concerns about the efficiency and seriousness of the local authorities in handling such a grave matter. On August 13, 2024, the Calcutta High Court intervened and ordered the state police to hand over the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The court expresses its dissatisfaction with the ongoing investigation and flagged.

Vandalism and Further Violence
On August 15, 2024, the situation escalate when a large crowd vandalized R G Kar Medical College.
Damaging several sections of the hospital, including the area where the young doctor was found. The medical students who were protesting were also attack. Further highlighting the vulnerability of doctors, especially women, to violence in their workplaces.
Nationwide Withdrawal of Services
In response to these events, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has announced a nationwide withdrawal of services by doctors of modern medicine. This strike will take place from 6 AM on Saturday, August 17, 2024, to 6 AM on Sunday, August 18, 2024, lasting for 24 hours. While essential services such as emergency care and casualty management will continue.
Routine outpatient departments (OPDs) will be close, and elective surgeries will not be conduct during this period. This strike will affect all sectors where modern medicine is practiced.
