Coronavirus cases in India today: Amid a sudden surge in the number of cases of COVID-19 and influenza, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level meeting on Wednesday. Taking note of the rise in the number of cases in the past two weeks, PM Modi directed officials to enhance genome sequencing and emphasized following Covid-appropriate behaviour.

According to Union Health Ministry data, 1,134 new cases of coronavirus were recorded today. With this, the number of active cases increased to 7,026. Also, the death toll climbed to 5,30,813 with five deaths.

The Prime Minister also assessed the preparedness of health infrastructure and logistics in view of the COVID-19 and influenza situation in the country. He also enquired about the status of the vaccination campaign, emergence of new variants of COVID-19 and influenza types and their public health implications for the country.

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), a comprehensive presentation was made covering the global Covid situation including the rising cases in India by Secretary, Health, Rajesh Bhushan.

PM Modi was briefed about how India stands when compared to global weekly positive cases reported in the week ending March 22. While the average daily cases in India is 888, globally it’s around 1.08 lakh during the same week.

He was also briefed about the availability and prices of 20 main Covid drugs, 12 other drugs, eight buffer drugs and one influenza drug is being monitored. According to a PIB release, a mock drill was also conducted on December 27, 2022 in around 22,000 hospitals across the country and many remedial measures taken by hospitals thereafter.

The prime minister was apprised of the influenza situation in the country and he directed officials to enhance whole genome sequencing of positive samples with the designated INSACOG genome sequencing laboratories. This will support tracking of newer variants, if any, and timely response, the PMO said.
