Post-Vaccine Symptoms More Common In Young Than Elderly, Says Study

According to a study by the Kochi branch of the Indian Medical Association, the symptoms that occur after taking the Covid-19 vaccine are more prevalent among younger people than the elderly in India (IMA).

The study said that with advancing age, the chances of developing post-vaccination symptoms decreased. The study of 5,396 individuals found that those in the 20-29 age group had a frequency of symptoms of 81 per cent after being vaccinated, while for those in the 80-90 age range, it was seven per cent.

The post-vaccination symptoms were noted less than 12 hours after administration of the dose and more women than men were identified, the study further indicated. Compared to 58.6% of men, about 74.7% of women experienced post-immunization symptoms.

The study stated that two-thirds of the healthcare professionals who completed the survey administered the Covid-19 vaccine reported moderate and short-lived post-immunisation symptoms. In most cases, the effects were milder than anticipated or according to the vaccine recipient’s expectations, the IMA study said.

Tiredness, myalgia, and fever are the most frequently detected symptoms following immunisation. 45 per cent of respondents reported exhaustion, 44 per cent experienced myalgia, 34 per cent fever, 28 per cent headache, 27 per cent local pain at the injection site, 12 per cent joint pain, 8 per cent nausea and 3 per cent diarrhoea, the study said.

The study’s other notable finding was that the symptoms of those with Covid-19 experience were not different from those with no history of the disease.

The study was the result of a cross-sectional online survey with questions relating to India’s immediate post-Covid vaccination experience. Dr Rajeev Jayadevan, Head of Epidemiology Cell of IMA Kochi, said that as many as 947 respondents who took part in that survey were over the age of 60.

Dr Jayadevan also tweeted about the results of the study, telling them through simpler graphics about the unique findings. The tweet also said that most respondents did not feel that the effects of the vaccine influenced their job the next day, as per the report.
