A Ground-breaking Medical Milestone Achieved by Indian Doctors

New Delhi, July 29, 2023: In an extraordinary display of medical expertise and innovation, a team of Indian doctors successfully performed a rare two-way swap liver transplant, granting a new lease of life to two foreign nationals from Uzbekistan. The complex procedure, which involved overcoming the challenges of ABO incompatibility, has marked a significant milestone in the history of medical advancements. The medical team’s determination and exceptional skills have not only saved the lives of 41-year-old Gulyam and 51-year-old Matlubakhon but have also showcased India’s capabilities in the field of liver transplantation.

In a remarkable feat of surgical precision, Indian doctors at the BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital, led by Dr. Abhideep Chaudhary, Vice Chairman & HOD, HPB Surgery, and Liver Transplantation, achieved a medical breakthrough that is set to be remembered for ages. The two foreign nationals from Uzbekistan, Gulyam and Matlubakhon, were in dire need of liver transplants due to life-threatening conditions. However, the significant challenge of ABO incompatibility between the patients and their designated donors posed a daunting obstacle.

Overcoming ABO Incompatibility: An Unprecedented Solution

The intricacy of the situation arose from the mismatched blood groups between the patients and their designated donors. Gulyam’s blood group was B, but his son, who volunteered to donate, had blood group A. Similarly, Matlubakhon, in need of an urgent transplant, had blood group A, while her sister’s blood group was B. ABO-incompatible transplants usually face a high rate of organ rejection, making this situation highly challenging. The team of Indian doctors, however, devised an innovative solution, where willing donors exchanged organs to match the blood groups of the recipients, paving the way for successful liver transplants.

In a bold and unprecedented move, the medical team decided to proceed with a family swap liver transplant. The donors, close relatives of the recipients, selflessly agreed to exchange organs, enabling a more compatible match for the life-saving procedure. The complex surgeries were performed simultaneously, showcasing the remarkable skill and coordination of the medical team.

Family Swap Liver Transplants: A Rare and Complex Procedure

Family swap liver transplants for foreign nationals are extremely rare as it demands patients and donors to be of the same nationality and close relatives. Moreover, both surgeries had to take place simultaneously, adding to the complexity. Undeterred by these challenges, the Indian medical team, led by Dr. Abhideep Chaudhary, Vice Chairman & HOD, HPB Surgery, and Liver Transplantation, BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital, embarked on this life-saving mission.

Dr. Chaudhary expressed his appreciation for the remarkable efforts of the medical team consisting of 20 skilled doctors. The team gained approval from both families and secured necessary clearances from the authorization committee to proceed with the swap liver transplant. The dedication and expertise of the team played a pivotal role in achieving this remarkable medical breakthrough.
