Light rain was reported in several areas of the city on Sunday. For the second day in a row, the maximum temperature stayed below 40 degrees Celsius, but due to high humidity, people felt uncomfortable, and the heat index, or feel-like temperature, increased to 53 degrees Celsius.
Until the end of the month, Delhi is not expected to experience a heatwave, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast very light rain for the next seven days. For Delhi, the monsoon season typically begins on June 27. There have been 14 heatwave days in Safdarjung this summer, which is the most in at least 14 years.
On Sunday, Safdarjung recorded a maximum temperature of 39.8 degrees Celsius, which is one degree higher than average. The city saw its worst stretch of weather, with maximum temperatures consistently above 40 degrees Celsius, from May 14 to June 21. When the temperature reached 39.4 degrees Celsius on Saturday, the spell ended.
The heat index was recorded at 53 degrees Celsius, down from 47 degrees Celsius the day before, due to the high humidity, even though the maximum temperature stayed below 40 degrees. In the last 24 hours, the humidity fluctuated between 49% and 73%. According to IMD’s prediction, the heat index is expected to stay between 51 and 53 degrees Celsius for the next 48 hours.
Over the next six days, the city is expected to experience extremely light rain. Thunderstorms could occur during the next few days, an IMD official stated, adding that heatwave conditions are unlikely until the end of the month.
A “yellow” alert for thunderstorms with very light rain has been issued by IMD for Monday. On Monday, gusty winds of 30 to 40 kmph are predicted. On Monday, the high temperature is predicted to remain at or near 39 degrees Celsius; however, starting on Tuesday, it may rise above 40 degrees.
June 25–28 is expected to see the highest temperature stay between 40 and 42 degrees Celsius, with a possible drop to 39 degrees on June 29. Over the next few days, the minimum temperature is probably going to stay between 29 and 31 degrees Celsius.
