The surge in the number of Covid-19 cases in India has health authorities on alert. According to the Union Health Ministry data, India recorded 1,890 cases of coronavirus on Sunday. This is the highest in 149 days. Also, the data shows that the number of active cases has increased to 9,433. It was on October 28 last year when India recorded 2,208 cases of Covid-19 in a single day. With seven deaths, the death toll has increased to 5,30,831.

In the national capital, 153 new Covid cases were reported on Sunday at a positivity rate of 9.13 per cent. Total active cases in Delhi now stand at 528.

According to health officials, the severity of the disease is not high among patients but most of the were admitted because of co-morbid conditions. There are 39 patients admitted to hospitals in the national capital. Out of them, 19 are in ICU (intensive care unit) and three are on ventilator support.

The rise in the number of coronavirus cases in Delhi comes amid a spike in H3N2 influenza cases across the country.

Considering this, hospitals like the Lok Nayak Hospital, the biggest hospital under the Delhi government which had handled the bulk of Covid cases, conducted a two-hour long mock drill to see the preparedness in case of any emergency.

Other hospitals like the Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital and Satyawadi Raja Harish Chandra Hospital also checked their preparedness to tackle the surge in the number of Covid-19 cases.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level meeting to check the preparedness of health infrastructure and logistics in the country considering the surge in the COVID-19 and influenza situation in the country. He had directed officials to enhance genome sequencing and emphasized following Covid-29 appropriate behaviour.
