Cancer cases are increasing every year in India and 42,80,053 people got diagnosed with Cancer in the past three years.
In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Dr Bharati Pravin Pawar said that under the Strengthening of Tertiary Cancer Care Centres Facilities Scheme, 19 State Cancer Institutes (SCIs) and 20 Tertiary Care Cancer Centres (TCCCs) have been approved across the country.
Growing Focus on Oncology in AIIMS
There is also focus on Oncology in its various aspects in case of new AIIMS and many institutions approved for upgradation under Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojna (PMSSY). Cancer treatment facilities at six new AIIMS at Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Jodhpur, Patna, Raipur and Rishikesh are fully functional. In addition, the government is also setting up a National Cancer Institute at Jhajjar (Haryana) and a second campus of Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute, Kolkata. “All these enhance the capacity for treatment of cancer in the country,” Pawar said in the Lok Sabha.
Centre’s Support to States to Fight Cancer
Under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke (NPCDCS), the union government provides technical and financial support to the States/UTs.
Under NPCDCS, 707 District Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) Clinics, 268 District Day Care Centres, and 5541 Community Health Center NCD Clinics have been set up. “The programme focusses on strengthening infrastructure, human resource development, health promotion and awareness generation for Cancer prevention, early diagnosis, management and referral to an appropriate level of healthcare facility for treatment of the Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), including Cancer,” Pawar added.
Alarming Increase in Cancer Patients in India Every Year
As per the Indian Council of Medical Research – National Cancer Registry Programme (ICMR-NCRP), India is witnessing an increase in Cancer cases every year. 42,80,053 people have been diagnosed with Cancer in the last three years. In 2020, the country registered 13, 92, 179 cases of Cancer and the number increased to 14,26, 447 in 2021. This further increased to 14, 61,427 in 2022.
