The Tokyo Olympics organising committee informed that 18 more Games-related COVID-19 infections have been reported on Sunday which takes the total count to 259 since the beginning of July.
Among the 18 who are infected, 11 are contractors, five are Olympics-linked officials and one is a volunteer according to Kyodo News. 13 are residents of Japan and five of them are from abroad. However, the total figures do not include cases announced by central and local governments.
Toshiro Muto, the CEO of the Tokyo Olympics organising committee has said that the Games-related infections are within expectations and there is no link between the Games and rising infections in Tokyo.
Kyodo News quoted Toshiro Muto as saying, “We are conducting more than 30,000 tests every day, quickly isolating any positive cases and taking appropriate steps to prevent the virus from spreading.”
“Having gone into these Olympics promising a safe and secure games for all participants, Tokyo residents and the Japanese people, I think we have been able to deal with COVID-19 measures at a level within expectations so far,” he added.
Meanwhile, six people have had their accreditation revoked for egregious offenses at the ongoing Olympics so far, Toshiro Muto the CEO of the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee confirmed on Sunday.
As per reports of Kyodo News Regarding incidents of participants being punished for violating the “playbook” — a set of rules for athletes, staff, and media members — Muto confirmed that so far six people have had their accreditation revoked for egregious offenses.
