On Friday, June 28, Bengaluru reported two suspected dengue deaths, despite the city’s dengue case count continuing to climb. Although a single suspected death was reported within the boundaries of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), another was noted beyond the BBMP.
An octogenarian who lived within the BBMP limits as well as a sexagenarian who lived outside the limits died in the hospital from what appears to be dengue, according to the preliminary information provided by the health officials. The city limits were the scene of both fatalities.
The BBMP identified the 80-year-old deceased as Niraja Devi, a native of Tamil Nadu, while Abhilash, the 24-year-old victim of the vector-borne disease, is from Kaggadasapura. Devi was a cancer patient as well. On Saturday, the civic organization intends to determine the cause of death.
If confirmed, these will be the first deaths due to the dengue in the city this year. Meanwhile, a total of five deaths have been reported in Karnataka, so far this year. While two deaths have been reported from Hassan, one each has been reported from Shivamogga, Dharwad, and Haveri.
Suralkar Vikas Kishor, Health Commissioner, BBMP said so far from January 1 to June 28, Bengaluru city has recorded as many as 1,530 confirmed dengue cases.

Leading the civic body’s “Dry Day” initiative on Friday was Chief Civic Commissioner Tushar Giri Nath, who recently tested positive for dengue. Officials went door-to-door, requesting that residents empty out old, stagnant water and replace it with fresh water. In order to stop the disease from spreading, he gave officials instructions to make microplans and go house to house conducting surveys and awareness campaigns. The civic body will use autorickshaws with public address systems installed to raise awareness in high-caseload areas.
Additionally, he stated that the results of the ongoing house-to-house survey should be uploaded into the PRISM-H program on a daily basis. He continued by saying that BBMP is making every effort to stop the spread.
