Indian Pharma Industry Strives to Maintain Reputation as the ‘Pharmacy of the World’
Mumbai, 23rd June 2023 – The Indian pharmaceutical industry, renowned for its significant contribution to global healthcare, is determined to maintain its reputation as the ‘Pharmacy of the World.’ Union Health Minister, Dr Mansukh Mandaviya, addressed the closing ceremony of the 8th Global Pharmaceutical Quality Summit organized by the Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance (IPA) and highlighted the industry’s pivotal role during the COVID-19 crisis.
During his speech, Dr Mansukh Mandaviya commended the collaborative efforts between the government and the pharma industry, emphasizing their responsibility in providing essential medicines and supporting the production of vaccines. He praised the industry for its unwavering dedication and responsible approach, which led to the supply of medicines and vaccines to over 150 countries.
However, while acknowledging the industry’s accomplishments, the minister emphasized the paramount importance of maintaining the quality of pharmaceutical products. He reiterated that the Indian pharma industry has never compromised on the quality of medicines, and no country has complained about the quality standards upheld by Indian pharmaceutical companies.
Dr Mansukh Mandaviya expressed concern about a small number of individuals within the industry who attempt to compromise on product quality. To combat this issue, he urged the pharma industry to establish a self-regulatory body that would monitor and ensure the quality of pharmaceutical products. The government, he added, maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards those compromising with the quality of medicines.
Furthermore, Dr Mansukh Mandaviya highlighted the government’s commitment to research and innovation by opening research facilities to the private sector. This move aims to accelerate advancements in the pharmaceutical field, further strengthening India’s position as a global leader in research and development.
The 8th Global Pharmaceutical Quality Summit, held under the theme of ‘Patient Centricity: New Paradigm of Manufacturing and Quality,’ served as a platform for industry leaders, global regulators, and stakeholders to exchange knowledge and deliberate on shaping the future of the Indian pharmaceutical landscape.
