In a remarkable development, the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, announced the prestigious Padma Shri awards for distinguished doctors who have made significant contributions in the field of medicine. The awards were presented on the occasion of Republic Day, honoring individuals who have brought about positive changes in society through their exceptional service in healthcare.
Honoring the Grounded Heroes
This year, there was a noticeable shift in the trend as doctors working closely with people and making a tangible impact were recognized with the Padma Shri awards. The awards aimed to acknowledge their remarkable achievements and dedication to improving the lives of individuals and communities through their selfless work in the medical field.
Celebrating the Awardees
A total of 10 unsung heroes in medicine were among the 119 individuals conferred with the Padma Shri awards. These doctors have displayed exemplary commitment and have left a lasting impression on society with their outstanding contributions.
Exceptional Contributions in Medicine
Among the recipients of the Padma Shri awards, Dr. Chandrakant S. Pandav, former Professor & Head of the Department of Community Medicine at AIIMS, New Delhi, was recognized for his exceptional work. Dr. Pandav, also known as the ‘Iodine Man of India,’ has been instrumental in raising awareness about iodine deficiency disorders and has made significant contributions to public health, nutrition, and health systems research.
Remembering the Late Dr. Jitendra Nath Pande
Late Dr. Jitendra Nath Pande, an eminent pulmonologist and former Head of the Department of Medicine at AIIMS, was also honored posthumously with the Padma Shri award. Dr. Pande, who tragically lost his life to COVID-19, was known for his pioneering research in high altitude physiology, lung mechanics, and pulmonary diseases.
Philanthropic Service Recognized
Dr. Krishna Mohan Pathi, a retired professor from Odisha, was acknowledged for his philanthropic endeavors in providing free healthcare services to tribals in the Ganjam region. Dr. Pathi’s selfless dedication to serving the underprivileged has made a significant impact on the lives of many.
The Oldest Entrant
Dr. Dilip Kumar Singh, the oldest recipient of the Padma Shri award this year at 92 years of age, was recognized for his unwavering commitment to healthcare. Known as the ‘God Father’ of the Indian Medical Association in Bhagalpur, Dr. Singh has played a crucial role in establishing and strengthening village healthcare practices, especially during challenging times like the cholera outbreak and polio treatment.
