US First Lady Melania Trump arrived at a government school in south Delhi today to attend a session of the ‘Happiness Class’.
As per the original plan, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia were to accompany Mrs Trump during her visit to the class.
However, the invitation to them were withdrawn later.
On First Lady’s visit to a Delhi govt school, US embassy in India said, “While US Embassy had no objection to the presence of CM & Deputy CM, we appreciate their recognition that this isn’t a political event & that it’s best to ensure focus is on education, school, & students”.
Manish Sisodia, who also holds the education portfolio, said in a statement: “It is a matter of great pride for Delhi Government, Delhi government teachers and students that first lady Melania Trump is visiting a Delhi Government school. It is a big appreciation for us that the work of AAP government in education sector, especially Happiness classes, is being recognised in the world.”
Delhi Government had started the happiness curriculum in 2018. As part of the class, students till Class VIII are taught various activities.
Welcoming First Lady Melania Trump, Arvind Kejriwal tweeted this morning: “@FLOTUS will attend happiness class in our school today. Great day for our teachers, students and Delhiites. For centuries, India has taught spirituality to the world. Am happy that she will take back the msg of happiness from our school”.
Manish Sisodia tweeted, “Welcome to our school @FLOTUS! We hope you would have a great time here in #HappinessClass It’s just 18 months old initiative but early results have made us confident that @HappinessDelhi is the ultimate solution to all violence & hate in mindsets that we are facing worldwide.”
