A clinical trial is being conducted by US researchers to test what happens when adults who have been fully vaccinated with one type of Covid-19 vaccine receive booster doses of a different Covid-19 vaccine.
According to the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), Xinhua reported, the trials are being conducted with an aim to determine the safety and immunogenicity of mixed boosted regimens.
Each vaccine group will enroll about 25 people between the age group of 18 to 55 years, and about 25 people aged 56 years and older. The participants will receive a single booster dose of the Moderna coronavirus vaccine as part of the trial, in twelve to 20 weeks following their initial vaccination program.
According to the NIH, people who have not received the covid vaccine yet are also eligible to enroll in the trial in another regime. Hence, these volunteers will initially receive the two-dose of Moderna Covid-19 vaccine regimen and will be assigned to receive a booster dose of a vaccine about 12 to 20 weeks later.
The participants will also be asked to provide their blood samples in a sequential manner so that responses against current circulating strains of SARS-CoV-2 can be evaluated in the trial of the investigators as well as emerging variants, according to the NIH.
Late summer this year, the initial trial results are expected.
